Item Description
The Askari Monument on Kenyatta Avenue was erected in 1928 in memory of Native Troops that fought and acted as carriers during the Great War of 1914. It was made by Myrander SC (whose insignia is inscribed on the right hand side of the monument) and represents a porter, an Askari (a fighter) and a Gun Carrier. It was erected in honour of the King's African Rifles and Carrier Corps, 400,000 of whom fought alongside the British in the East African Campaigns in the First World War.
